Chelsea signs Mendy for £22m

As part of the moves employed by the Chelsea Football Club to see that they return to the top flight in the Premier League, they have successfully signed a new gloveman in the person of Edouard Mendy – a France-born Senegal International. The Blues recently announce signing the goalkeeper for 22 million Pounds from the French Ligue-1 side; Rennes.

According to Mendy, coming to Chelsea to him is achieving a great feat in this career as the club is of great prestige in the world of football. In a quote, he said: “I am so excited to be joining Chelsea. It’s a dream for me to be a part of this exciting squad and to work with Frank Lampard and all of his coaching staff.” He further said, “I look forward to meeting my teammates and can’t wait to get started.”

Interestingly, Petr Cech who had also trodden Mendy’s path to be transferred from Rennes to Stamford Bridge in 2004 and now a part of the technical and performance team was part of the people that played the role of discovering Mendy as a good asset to be part of the team as disclosed by the club’s director – Marina Granovskaia. In Granovskaia statement, he said: “As soon as Petr Cech and our technical team identified Edouard as the most suitable goalkeeper to complement our existing group, there was only one player we wanted to bring in.” He further acknowledged Edouard’s worth – “Edouard arrives following a season of real success with Rennes, he is ambitious for more, and we welcome him our club.”

It should be remembered that Mendy had a great performance for Rennes in the previous season, with a lot of accolades for the 28-year old. His arrival at the club would demand him to take the first goalkeeper position as the fans had not been pleased with Kepa’s performance over the past few seasons; it should not be forgotten that Kepa is the world most expensive goalkeeper but he had only proven his worth for a short period ever since he came to Stamford Bridge in 2018.
