Barca’s new signing Sergino Dest admits that he didn’t understand Messi’s statement during their conversation
The 19-year-old defender Sergino Dest whom Barcelona signed last Thursday from Ajax has disclosed in a statement that he was unable to get a clue of what Lionel Messi was saying during their conversation but believes that everything must be okay.
In his statement with NOS, he said: “The Argentine doesn’t speak English, but it was very special to meet him. If I am honest, I don’t know what he told me, but we were both smiling, so everything must be fine, right?”
The United States international joined Barcelona for a five-year deal at a cost of £23.5 million, not considering Bayern Munich’s offer because of his long-time intention to play for the same club as his football hero Ronaldinho. In the statement made for his reason for coming to Barcelona, he said:
“I chose Barcelona over any other team because it has always been a dream of mine to play here. My favourite player, my idol growing up was Ronaldinho and he has made history in Barcelona. When I found out about the interest from Barca, it was an easy decision to make.”
Dest made his debut appearance as the first American to play for the club in their Sunday’s match against Sevilla that ended with a goal draw.
He came in as a substitute in the 75th minute to replace Jordi Alba who couldn’t proceed with the match due to injury.
Alongside being the first American player to play for Barcelona, Sergino Dest is also the fifth USA player to appear in La Liga, coming after Josy Altidore, Kasey Keller, Oguchi Onyewu and Shaq Moore.
